Fillmore! (April 19-23 and August 6, 1983)

In 1983, Garfield by Jim Davis was already a cultural touchstone. As an artist who'd been illustrating the adventures of a sassy orange cat for several decades, and who was known for his elaborate art and inventiveness, even on the daily pages, Arriola had something to say about it. This took the form of "Fillmore," a week's worth of strips divided between April and August 1983 in which Gordo's pet canary adopts the famous cat's static storytelling and plump silhouette.

Arriola's experience as an animator provides him with extra ammo in the final strip of the initial run.
The thrill of satire didn't last long, and the final Fillmore strip runs in August, 1983.
