Newspaper Clippings: POST-DISPATCH COMIC ARTISTS ...

Part of a series of banner ads which introduced assorted United Features cartoonists to an audience which otherwise only knew them through their strips. Gus appears to have provided the illustrations, although the syndicate may have provided the text from Gus' biographical notes -- thus Pepito being described as "irresponsible," when he's very much the opposite. Arriola was, of course, born in Florence, AZ, and was indeed a big fan of the newspaper funnies. Growing up in a Spanish-speaking household, Arriola says that he learned English through the comic strips!

The figure depicted looming over Gus in this illustration is most likely Fred Quimby, who was Arriola's boss while working at the MGM Animation department on Tom & Jerry and other shorts.
