Storylines: Gordo’s Sabbatical (Part 1)
The longest ongoing storyline in the history of the strip is "Gordo’s Sabbatical," which ran from January 6, 1947 to March 20, 1948, and involved a "rest year" during which Gordo and chums embark on a series of adventures across Mexico.
The arc sees the introduction of El Cometa Halley, a new plot by The Widow to win Gordo's heart, and a trip to Acapulco. We also meet a number of Gordo's relatives during the journey, and end the adventure with the original write-in recipe offer which notoriously swamped newspaper offices across the United States.
These two weeks' worth of dailies come early in the storyline, during which point The Poet has freshly sold Gordo on the idea of taking a year off from his labors. Relegated to housework while his nephew Pepito tills the fields, Gordo develops an addiction to radionovelas (radio soap operas):
