Storylines: The Wishing Well

Gordo's Sundays eventually became known for their standalone gags and visual experimentation, but between 1943 and 1946 it was the only place where Arriola could tell stories about the denizens of Del Monte. In this series of strips from April and May, 1946, Gordo and his pals, The Poet and Juan Pablo, find themselves the victims of an embargo at the local cantina. The decision to dig a wishing well bears fruit -- grape, in fact! -- and dramatically changes the power structure in Del Monte!

My collection contains the full series, scanned and shared below, except for the May 5th strip. I've replaced the missing strip with one scanned and posted by Ger Apeldoorn from his superb blog, The Fabuleous Fifties (read Ger's many Gus Arriola posts, with many lovely color scans, here).

I've also added missing panels from Gordo reprints Tip Top Comics.

CW: As with all early Gordo strips, please be aware that stereotype plays an outsized role in the depictions of character, setting and -- in particular -- dialogue. The depiction of Pelon Padilla with lips specifically colored white (April 28, 1946) is unusual for the character and isn't repeated, in this series or in his general appearances.
