GORDO IN THE 1970s: July 1974

Ever the aging rake, Gordo would seem to only have one thing on his mind -- gorls, of course -- if it weren't also for his love of food (given a dynamic typographical treatment in July 11's strip). So he has two things on his mind. Fair enough.

We spend a little time in the second week of strips with Del Monte's smart-aleck snail community. The critter's easily-simplified shapes and lines must have commended them to Arriola's tastes at the time. He'd adopted a practice of economical shapes and fiigures to deal with the shrinking real estate made available to newspaper comic strips in the 1970s and 1980s, as well as relief from ever-frustrating deadlines.

Daily strips from July 8 - July 20 1974
