GORDO IN THE 1970s: October 1974

The 1970s were shockingly rife with high-profile hijackings, which led to a minor industry in entertainment of hijacking-related humor. It seemed as though practically every sitcom, comedy-variety show, or comic strip was up to wring a laugh out of an alarming trend -- including Gordo. Other topical tidbits referenced in this stretch of strips include the Clivus Mentrum, a particular type of composting toilet that had just been introduced to the US by activist and art collector Abby Rockefeller, and the "Cyprus flap," which refers to the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in the middle of 1974.
